About the course

MINST - The Non-surgical Regeneration Hand-on Course for infrabony defects

Periodontal treatment is quickly moving towards a philosophy consisting of minimally invasive approaches. Minimally invasive non-surgical therapy (MINST) has the primary goal of minimising the morbidity of clinical procedures using techniques and instruments that reduce tissue trauma and maintain tissue architecture to improve and benefit the healing phase. It is becoming increasingly clear that minimally invasive principles, both surgically and non- surgically, enhance the biologic cellular principles which underpin periodontal regeneration and repair. MINST aims to improve clinical attachment levels and prognosis of infrabony defects.

Aims, Objectives and Learning Content:
  • To introduce the concept of minimally invasive non-surgical (MINST) in the management of infrabony defects (intrabony defects and furcations)

  • To present the wound healing and biological mechanisms following MINST of infrabony defects

  • To present and appraise the evidence base supporting MINST of infrabony defects

  • To understand the biological rationale and evidence behind MINST of intrabony defects

Hands-on Objective:
  • To discuss and demonstrate the protocols, armamentarium and technique for effective MINST in clinical practice

  • To be able to implement the correct technique required for effective MINST in clinical practice

Dr. Varkha Rattu

Dr. Varkha Rattu graduated from Queen Mary University of London in 2018 and completed her four-year Master’s in Clinical Dentistry (Periodontology) at King’s College London in 2025, graduating with distinction. She has extensive experience across both specialist practice and hospital settings, with her commitment to clinical excellence recognised through multiple national awards.

Actively involved in periodontal research, Dr. Rattu has published in leading peer-reviewed journals, serves as a reviewer, and was awarded the British Society of Periodontology Systematic Review Prize.

Trained under Professor Luigi Nibali, a leading figure in Minimally Invasive Non-Surgical Therapy (MINST), Dr. Rattu has developed particular expertise in this field. She is now a sought-after speaker, regularly delivering national lectures and hands-on workshops on MINST, sharing her insights into redefining non-surgical periodontal regeneration.
